Strength isnt just about building muscles. When people hear strength training, they often picture heavy weights or intense gym sessions. But strength training is about much more than building muscle. It’s about supporting your body to move well, feel capable, and stay independent as you age.
Done properly, strength training improves joint health, bone density, balance, and confidence. It helps with everyday tasks like getting up off the floor, lifting shopping bags, and maintaining good posture. For adults over 40, strength training is one of the most important investments you can make in your long-term health.
The good news is that strength training doesn’t need to be extreme or intimidating. It should be progressive, well coached, and tailored to your body and lifestyle.
Here are 5 simple ways to approach strength training safely and effectively:
Train strength regularly - Two to three strength training sessions per week is enough to see meaningful benefits.
Prioritise technique - Good movement patterns protect your joints and ensure the right muscles are working.
Start where you are - Strength training should meet you at your current ability and build gradually over time.
Allow recovery - Muscles adapt and grow stronger during rest. Recovery is part of progress.
Train for real life - Strength training should support how you move day to day, not just what you lift.
Create Your Strength SMART Goal
Ask yourself:
How many strength training sessions per week are realistic?
Which movements would improve daily life for me?
✍️ Example:“I will complete 2 strength training sessions per week for the next 12 weeks to improve confidence and everyday movement.”
